For those among the culturally challenged, meritocratic and casteist chatterati, who see JNU as a waste of government subsidy, these facets of JNU are distasteful and border on being anti-national. Another Rohith Vemula will not happen in this campus.
The idea of Dalit liberation now constitutes a central component of the idea of JNU. Dalit voices still complain of the various obstacles that remain in constructing a socially barrier-free world for them, but their voices are in the mainstream of the politics of the campus. This is not to say that exclusion has been successfully overcome. Women often outnumber men in our lecture theatres as well as in the library, dhabas and in demonstrations.
Deprivation points are super-added on the basis of region and gender. Admissions are exam-based but occur strictly in accordance with statutory provisions regarding reservations for socially-deprived castes and communities. The social consciousness of JNU is to enable the disempowered. JNU is an enigma for various other reasons.
